The Columbus Crew announced the acquisition of Spanish midfielder Brais Mendez from Real Sociedad, marking the club’s latest move to bolster its midfield ahead of a crucial stretch of the MLS season.
Mendez, 29, arrives as a designated player and will occupy an international roster slot, signing a deal that runs through the 2028‑29 campaign with an option for an additional year.
Having spent a decade in Spain’s top flight with Celta Vigo and Real Sociedad, the midfielder brings a blend of creativity and work‑rate that the Crew’s sporting director believes can elevate the team’s tactical flexibility.
Proven pedigree on the European stage
During his recent spell with Real Sociedad, Mendez contributed 33 goals and 24 assists across 166 appearances, helping the club secure a UEFA Champions League berth and capture the Copa del Rey.
At Celta Vigo he recorded 22 goals and 18 assists in 166 matches, further underscoring his ability to influence games at the highest level.
The Crew entered the FIFA World Cup break sitting 10th in the Eastern Conference, two points outside the playoff places, making Mendez’s arrival timely as the squad looks to climb the standings.

General manager Issa Tall highlighted the player’s technical qualities, stating that his understanding of the game and ability to influence matches align with the club’s vision for sustained competitiveness.
Mendez’s debut is scheduled for the team’s return to action on July 22, when Columbus hosts New York City FC at home, a match that could prove pivotal in the playoff race.
