Commanders’ New Tight End Chig Okonkwo Aims to Bolster 2026 Offense

Acquired to Replace Zach Ertz, Okonkwo Brings Proven Receiving Skills and Fantasy Appeal

A Strategic Addition for the Commanders

The Washington Commanders have made a calculated move ahead of the 2026 season, adding veteran tight end Chig Okonkwo to a roster that has been searching for a reliable second option behind star receiver Terry McLaurin.

Okonkwo entered the NFL after being selected by the Tennessee Titans in the 2022 draft, and over his first three seasons he has built a reputation for precise route running, a low drop rate, and the ability to create separation downfield.

With quarterback Jayden Daniels slated to lead the offense, the team expects Okonkwo to become a primary target, effectively filling the void left by Zach Ertz, whose departure opened a clear path for the new acquisition.

Statistically, Okonkwo has been one of only six tight ends to record at least 50 receptions in each of the past three seasons, and in 2025 he posted 560 receiving yards on 56 catches, averaging 10 yards per catch and scoring two touchdowns.

The move also carries fantasy football implications; ESPN analyst Eric Moody recently highlighted Okonkwo as a sleeper, noting that the Commanders’ lack of proven pass catchers beyond McLaurin could translate into a high volume of targets for the tight end.
