A Community in Mourning
On August 10, 2025, a sudden cardiac emergency struck during a practice session at Lake Travis High School, claiming the life of senior Odin Hensley. The incident unfolded on the field, where teammates and coaches witnessed the crisis and immediately called for emergency assistance.
Hank Carter, the school's athletic director, reported the emergency to Travis County STAR Flight, which airlifted Hensley to Dell Children's Medical Center. The swift response underscored the seriousness of the situation and the coordinated effort among local services.
The news spread rapidly as teammates and classmates took to Instagram and Facebook, posting tributes such as "Rest in peace, Odin" and "Gone too soon. Rest easy, brother". Gilbert Ruiz, Hensley's uncle, shared a heartfelt message on Facebook, describing his nephew as a "young king" and a "greatest all around young man".
A prayer vigil held at Lake Hill Church in Austin drew roughly 350 attendees, where coaches, teammates and community members gathered to share memories and offer comfort. The ceremony highlighted the deep impact Hensley had on those around him.
In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign raised more than $145,000 for the Hensley family, reflecting a widespread desire to support them during this difficult time. Westlake High School, the Cavaliers' longtime rivals, also expressed condolences on their official Facebook page, extending solidarity to the family.
Despite the outpouring of support, neither Lake Travis High School nor Hensley's parents have issued a public statement regarding his passing, leaving many to reflect on the void left by his absence and the enduring legacy of a young athlete whose life was cut short.
