A New Era for Girls Soccer
The Connecticut High School Girls Soccer Challenge will make its debut on September 12 at Sporting CT in Middletown, bringing together eight teams from three different conferences. The event follows the success of the Connecticut High School Boys Soccer Challenge, which enters its fifth year on September 27, and will feature a schedule that pits familiar rivals against each other.
Opening matches at 4 p.m. include a repeat of last year’s CIAC Class L second‑round encounter between Sacred Heart Academy and Avon, while Rocky Hill takes on Valley Regional, the reigning Shoreline Conference champion. Later fixtures at 6:30 p.m. showcase Mercy versus Wethersfield, two CIAC quarterfinalists from a year ago, and an all‑CCC showdown between Farmington and Southington.
Schedule Highlights
The day’s lineup is designed to give each team a chance to test its strengths early in the season, with the early afternoon games setting the tone and the evening matches offering high‑stakes rematches that fans have been eager to see. Organizers say the format reflects the growing interest in girls’ soccer across the state.
Community leaders and coaches alike view the challenge as a pivotal step toward greater visibility for women’s high school sports. By hosting the tournament at a centralized venue, the event aims to create a festive atmosphere that celebrates the athletes, their families, and the broader soccer community in Connecticut.
