Connor Bedard, the Chicago Blackhawks' rising star, has secured a five-year, $15 million average annual value extension, a deal that keeps the 2024-25 Calder Trophy contender under contract through the 2030-31 season.
A Bridge Deal in a Changing Landscape
The agreement reflects a broader shift in the NHL’s salary-cap environment, where rising revenues have pushed teams to lock in young talent on shorter, more flexible terms rather than the eight-year maximum.
Bedard’s breakout campaign featured a career-best 30 goals, 45 assists and 75 points, marking him as the third player in Blackhawks history to reach the 30-goal plateau before his 21st birthday.
A shoulder injury sustained in December 2025 briefly slowed his production, but the forward remains a central piece of Chicago’s rebuilding effort.
With the league’s salary cap climbing, analysts predict that the $15 million AAV will look increasingly like a bargain as contracts for comparable talent swell.
The deal also leaves two other restricted free agents — Ethan Del Mastro and Kevin Korchinski — still without new contracts, adding intrigue to the Blackhawks’ offseason roster planning.
