The Cook Out Southern 500 roared to life on Sunday as the inaugural event of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, kicking off a high‑stakes stretch that will shape the championship battle for the season.
Qualifying was called off because of inclement weather, leaving NASCAR without traditional time‑run results to set the grid. In lieu of a qualifying session, the series turned to its performance metric – a composite of driver rankings, recent race finishes and other statistical measures – to establish the starting order for the 500‑mile showdown at Darlington Raceway.
Weather Disruption Forces Performance Metric Lineup
Tyler Reddick emerged at the top of the metric‑based lineup, earning the pole position, while Daniel Suarez secured the front‑row alongside him, forming the sport’s opening front row for the playoff opener.
Row two of the grid was filled by Ryan Preece and Denny Hamlin, rounding out the top four starters and highlighting the depth of competition among the playoff contenders.
Michael McDowell rounded out the top five, joining the elite group that will battle for the first playoff points of the season, while the remainder of the field was arranged according to the same performance‑based calculations.
