A New Era for Tigers Basketball
Texas Southern University announced this week that Corey Lowery will take the reins of the Tigers' men's basketball program, bringing to an end a nearly four‑month search for a permanent head coach.
Lowery, who has spent 27 years in coaching and previously led Lincoln University to a CIAA Coach of the Year award, joins after a stint at Seton Hall and a reputation for developing talent at historically Black colleges and universities.
His appointment comes after the board of regents voted to replace former Athletic Director Kevin Granger, who was removed in March amid a sexual assault investigation, with Shyrone Chatman serving as interim head coach.
Chatman, who steered the team from April through June, will now transition out as Lowery prepares to lead the program into its next chapter.
The university plans to open preseason practices on August 17, just days after classes resume, while the Board of Regents is slated to formally approve the hire at its next meeting on August 28.
Lowery's hiring also marks a strategic move by Texas Southern to enlist DHR Global, a global executive search firm, to assist in future athletic leadership searches.
The upcoming NCAA Division I men's basketball season is set to begin on November 1, but the Tigers have yet to release a full schedule, leaving fans eager to see how the new coach will shape the roster.
