Fourth of July Baseball Showdown
The Corsica Horned Frogs opened their Fourth of July series with an 11‑5 victory over the Platte Killer Tomatoes, a game that set the tone for a weekend of high‑scoring amateur baseball in South Dakota.
Lefty Tyson Wentland dominated the mound for Corsica, scattering hits over 7 ⅓ innings while striking out several batters, a performance that helped the Frogs build an early lead.
Platte answered in the second game with a dramatic eighth‑inning rally, as Richard Sternberg delivered a game‑winning hit and contributed 2 ⅔ shutout innings, narrowing the series to a split.
The weekend also featured standout outings from other teams: Tabor rolled past Lesterville 16‑0, with Josiah Peterson tossing a seven‑inning shutout and recording eight strikeouts; Parkston Mudcats crushed Dimock/Emery 14‑3; and Menno edged Freeman 12‑8 in a South Central League clash.
Key contributors at the plate included Jayce Slaba, who logged three hits, two RBIs and two runs for Corsica, while Preston Nedved collected four hits, two home runs and six RBIs across the two games for Platte.
