A Late Surge in Pullman
The Washington State Women’s Soccer Team opened their season with a 2-0 victory over UC Irvine on August 27 in Pullman, Washington. The Cougars controlled possession for much of the contest, but it was a late push that sealed the win.
Freshman forward Delaney Hawkins was the catalyst, striking twice within minutes of each other. Her first goal came in the 82nd minute, setting up the opening score, and she added a second in the 89th minute to extend the lead. Hawkins also contributed an assist earlier in the match, threading a pass that led to the Cougars’ first goal.
Goalkeeper Ashlyn Dvorak earned her first start in three appearances, delivering a clean sheet with four saves. The starter had missed the previous three games due to a cracked rib, and her return bolstered the defensive line that Coach Chris Citowicki praised for its cohesion.
Midfielder Lexi Lee highlighted the team’s tactical discipline and chemistry, noting that the side’s ability to execute set pieces and maintain pressure was key to the result. Lee expressed confidence that the Cougars will carry this momentum into their upcoming road trip.
The match was marked by physicality, with both squads committing 20 fouls and receiving yellow cards. Despite the rough play, the Cougars kept their composure and limited UC Irvine to few clear chances.
Next up, Washington State travels to Hawaii for two contests against Utah Valley and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Lee said the team is eager to test themselves on unfamiliar turf, where they hope to replicate the same disciplined performance.
