Statesboro High School announced this week that Courtnei Houston will serve as the interim head coach of the boys basketball program for the 2026‑2027 season. The appointment was made public ahead of the upcoming campaign, positioning Houston to guide the team while the school conducts a nationwide search for a permanent head coach.
A homegrown leader returns
Houston graduated from Statesboro High in 2005 and later played collegiately at Compton College before transferring to Georgia Southern University. There, he earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management and is currently working toward a master’s in health and physical education. His coaching career began in the community, where he led Langston Chapel Middle School to consecutive Coastal Empire Championship titles.
Beyond the court, Houston is a father of two and has long been involved in local youth programs. His deep connections to alumni, families, and students give him a unique perspective on the school’s culture and expectations. Athletic director Keith Wright praised Houston’s commitment, noting that his leadership style blends competitive drive with a focus on character development.
Looking ahead
The school plans to open the permanent head coach position to applications at the conclusion of the season, giving Houston a chance to showcase his vision for the program. In the meantime, he will oversee preseason preparations, player development, and community outreach, aiming to maintain the momentum built during his middle‑school coaching successes.
