Creek Wood Secures Inaugural Championship
The newly crowned TSSAA Class A girls flag football state championship saw Creek Wood defeat Merrol Hyde Magnet 25-6 in a game that showcased the growing competitiveness of high school flag football in Tennessee. The victory marked the first title in the tournament’s history and underscored the rapid rise of the sport at the state level.
After a tightly contested first half that left the teams tied at six, Creek Wood pulled away in the second half with a series of decisive drives. Key plays included a 78-yard interception return for a touchdown that swung momentum decisively in their favor.
Wilson’s Interception Masterclass
MVP Hollee Wilson was the centerpiece of the win, recording four interceptions throughout the championship game. One of those picks was returned 78 yards for a touchdown, while she also added 97 yards rushing and 25 yards passing. Wilson missed the previous season due to injury but finished the year with a total of 37 interceptions, a statistic that highlighted her knack for reading opposing offenses.
Coach James Smith praised his team’s resilience and the community’s unwavering support, noting that Wilson exemplifies the talent emerging from the school’s athletic program. He emphasized that the championship was the result of collective effort, from the defensive unit to the supporting cast.
Contributions from teammates Grace Merryman, Autumn Kirkman and Emma Reynolds helped sustain the offense and maintain pressure on Merrol Hyde. Their performances, alongside Wilson’s defensive heroics, illustrated the depth and balance that defined Creek Wood’s championship run.
