A New Chapter for the Cougars
Steve Haverdill, who has guided the Crestview Cougars to three Firelands Conference titles in 2020, 2021 and 2022, returns for his seventh season with the program. After a 6‑4 record and a playoff appearance last year, the coach is focused on restoring the team’s winning momentum.
Junior running back and linebacker Wyatt Barber emerged as a pivotal offensive weapon, rushing for 210 yards and three touchdowns in the previous campaign while earning All‑Northwest District second‑team honors. This season he is expected to shoulder an even larger share of the rushing attack as the team replaces graduated stars.
Senior receiver Carson Keener, who posted 22 catches for 447 yards and four touchdowns last year, also received All‑Northwest District second‑team recognition. His experience in the passing game should provide a reliable target for Barber and the new offensive pieces.
Defensively, the Cougars forced 21 turnovers in the last season, producing a plus‑11 turnover margin that highlighted their knack for creating opportunities on the field.
A Tough Schedule Awaits
The 2026 slate includes contests against Northwestern, Crestline, Independence, New London, South Central, Plymouth, St. Paul, Western Reserve, Monroeville and Mapleton, promising competitive matchups that will test the squad’s depth.
Although the program has logged a 6‑12 record in 12 playoff outings, the team is aiming to extend its playoff streak beyond the recent six‑year run that ended last year.
The departure of Ayden Reymer and Bransen Hider, who combined for 1,008 yards and 12 touchdowns in the previous season, leaves a void in the backfield, but the coaching staff believes Barber’s increased role and Keener’s route expertise will help fill the gap.
