Crimson Bears Kick Off State Baseball Tournament
Juneau‑Douglas High School’s baseball squad, known as the Crimson Bears, opened the Alaska School Activities Association Division I Baseball State Championships with an 8‑3 victory over the Colony Knights on Tuesday night.
The win was built on a collective approach, with the team’s depth and unselfish play shining throughout the contest.
Junior pitcher Hunter Carte delivered a solid outing, tossing three innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out four batters.
Senior first baseman Riley Fick earned the coaches’ Player of the Game honor after going 3‑for‑4 at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring once.
Madden Mendoza contributed defensively with five ground‑ball chances and a pop‑fly out, while senior left fielder Chris Andersen made a sliding catch in the fourth inning that halted a potential rally.
The Crimson Bears now turn their focus to the semifinals, where they will meet West Valley in a rematch that promises another tightly contested battle.
