A rally built on mistakes
The Chicago Cubs avoided a series sweep on Sunday, edging the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 in a back-and-forth contest at Wrigley Field. The win kept Chicago above .500 in their last 13 games and underscored the team’s resilience after a shaky start to the season.
A four-run burst in the sixth inning turned the tide. Two defensive miscues by the Cardinals opened the door for Chicago, allowing Nico Hoerner to deliver an RBI single that tied the game at three. The momentum continued as Alex Bregman doubled in a run and pinch-hitter Pedro Ramirez added an RBI fly ball, pushing the lead to 4-3.
Jordan Walker, already the league’s RBI leader with 67, launched his 20th homer in the sixth and later contributed a sacrifice fly in the eighth to extend the advantage. His performance highlighted a Cardinals offense that remained dangerous despite the errors.
On the mound, starter Javier Assad delivered 4 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, yielding only two singles while walking two and striking out two. Reliever Drew Pomeranz earned his first win since re-joining the club, and Jacob Webb closed out the ninth for his third save of the season.
What’s next for Chicago and St. Louis?
The Cardinals will look to rebound on Monday when right-hander Dustin May faces Milwaukee’s left-hander Shane Drohan in St. Louis. Meanwhile, the Cubs will shift their focus to Baltimore, where left-hander Matthew Boyd is slated to start against Orioles right-hander Shane Baz.
