Culver‑Stockton College in Missouri is set to field a varsity women’s flag football team for the 2027‑28 academic year, becoming the latest member of the Heart of America Athletic Conference to embrace the rapidly expanding sport.
The college has announced that it will soon begin the search for a head coach, a move that will kick off recruitment efforts during the 2026‑27 season as the program prepares for its inaugural campaign.
Conference expansion and new participants
Within the HAAC, seven fellow institutions — Baker University, Graceland University, Missouri Baptist University, Missouri Valley College, Park University, William Penn University and William Woods University — are slated to field teams in the conference’s first season of competition, bringing the total number of sponsoring schools to eight.
Beyond the conference, other Missouri institutions such as Avila University, Cottey College, Missouri Southern State University, North Central Missouri College and Westminster College have also launched varsity programs, underscoring the state’s growing commitment to the sport.
Northwestern University and the University of New Mexico are poised to field student‑run club teams for the 2026‑27 season, with New Mexico joining Grand Canyon University, UC Davis and the University of Nevada as the fourth Mountain West school to adopt a club offering.
The national landscape reflects this momentum, as more than 80 NCAA Division I institutions are expected to field club teams in 2026‑27, a figure that is projected to rise after the fall semester as additional schools finalize plans.
Atlantis University will enter the NIRSA Women’s Flag Football Club League for the 2026‑27 season, bringing the league’s membership to 51 teams and illustrating the sport’s expanding footprint across diverse collegiate environments.
