The Central Washington University women's soccer program entered the 2026 season with a clear sense of purpose after finishing fifth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll, collecting 31 points. The ranking reflects both the team's recent upward trajectory and the expectations placed on a squad that posted its most successful campaign since 2021.
Head coach John Hawks, now in his third year at the helm, emphasized continuity and growth during the preseason press conference. "We have a core group that knows how to win, and we’re looking to build on the momentum we created last year," he said.
Key Returners and Offensive Threats
Leading scorer Jaylee Reynolds, who burst onto the scene as a freshman with four goals and nine points, returns to anchor the attack. Alongside her, sophomores Emma Barrett and Sadie Schaefer, together with seniors Cam Sheets and Kelsey Fulton, form a versatile offensive lineup capable of generating multiple scoring chances.
The midfield and forward depth also feature contributions from the likes of Bella Green, a fifth‑year defender who has transitioned into a more attacking role, and Lainee Derry, who adds creativity on the wing.
Defensive Stability
Between the posts, senior goalkeeper Danika Galbraith brings a 1.33 goals‑against average, 64 saves and five shutouts from 11 starts last season. Her experience will be complemented by junior Leighton Menge, who also saw action in goal and provides depth.
The defensive unit is further reinforced by Bella Green, Lainee Derry, Kendal Smith, Peyton Wilson, Sydney Madison and Haley Engstrom, a group that combined for a strong shutout record and will look to limit opponents' chances from the outset.
Opening Weekend Schedule
CWU opens the season with the Humboldt Kickoff Classic, hosting Cal Poly Humboldt on Friday at 3:00 p.m. before traveling to face Stanislaus State on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The matches will serve as an early test of the team's chemistry and tactical adjustments.
The non‑conference slate also includes a showdown with Western Washington and Simon Fraser, who tied for first in the preseason poll with 60 points each, as well as a clash with Western Oregon, who earned fourth place with 37 points.
