The Cyclones entered the matchup with a 1-1 record, hoping to turn a modest start into a statement win. Instead, they walked away with a 21-14 loss that left their playoff aspirations in jeopardy.
Quarterback Cam Brinkman proved he could move the ball in two ways, racking up 115 rushing yards while completing 13 of 19 passes for 133 yards. His versatility kept the defense guessing, but the offense stalled time and again.
A costly mistake in the final minutes
Late in the fourth quarter, Brinkman missed a critical pass that was intercepted by Caleb Smith. The turnover halted a drive that had already advanced into Joliet Catholic’s 25-yard line, squandering a chance to tie or take the lead.
Joliet Catholic capitalized on the turnover, with Derrick Pomatto punching in a six-yard touchdown run that sealed the victory. Pomatto finished with three scores, including the game-winning rush.
Penalties proved to be a silent killer. Sacred Heart-Griffin accumulated 55 yards in flags, many of which came on drives that had already reached the opponent’s 25-yard line. Those setbacks forced the offense into longer, riskier plays.
Coach John Allison laid the blame squarely on execution and teamwork after the game. He called out the overreliance on Brinkman and urged the squad to tighten up before the next contest.
The loss also ended a streak in which Joliet Catholic had dominated the head-to-head playoff record, improving to 6-0 against Sacred Heart-Griffin. The Cyclones now face a pivotal stretch where each game could define their season.
