A Scoring Threat with Proven Clutch
Dai Dai Ames, a 21‑year‑old guard from Chicago, has pledged to spend his senior year at the University of Tennessee, bringing a rare blend of scoring firepower and rugged defense to the Volunteers. Known for his ability to create his own shot, Ames arrives after a college journey that took him through Kansas State, the University of Virginia and the University of California, Berkeley.
At California he averaged 16.9 points, 2.2 assists and two rebounds per game while earning third‑team All‑ACC honors. His high school days at Kenwood Academy saw him surpass 1,500 points, capture back‑to‑back Illinois Class 4A Super‑Sectional titles and be rated the No. 1 recruit in the state as a member of the class of 2023. He also showcased his talents on the national stage at the Jordan Brand Classic.
A New Chapter for the Volunteers
Ames’ decision was swift and centered on Tennessee’s storied history and the coaching philosophy of Rick Barnes. The guard said the program’s winning pedigree and the chance to contribute to a culture that values toughness over personal statistics were decisive factors.
He will share the court with two other Chicago natives, a coincidence that underscores the city’s growing influence on the Volunteers’ roster. Ames is not chasing a larger role or job security; instead, he wants to be part of a winning program and help fill the void left by Ja'Kobi Gillespie, who is preparing for the 2026 NBA Draft.
Beyond the Stats
Beyond scoring, Ames is focused on sharpening his point‑guard reads and becoming a reliable outside shooter. He believes the environment at Tennessee will allow him to develop those skills while contributing to a collective goal of advancing deep into the NCAA tournament.
