The Dakota Fusion 16U girls soccer team came within a whisker of securing back‑to‑back national titles on Saturday, succumbing to a 1‑0 defeat against Gretna Elite Academy/Lincoln City FC in the US Youth Soccer National Championships Premier Division 16U final.
A Run Built on Defense and Depth
Coached by Jon Melendez, the Fusion entered the tournament with a core that had just captured the USYS Presidents Cup a year earlier as 15U champions. The squad, composed largely of players who start on their high school varsity teams across North Dakota, carried that experience into every match.
Nebraska, the eventual champions, posted a perfect 6‑0 record, outscoring opponents 17‑0 over the group stage and knockout rounds. Their decisive goal arrived from a free‑kick in the 80th minute, slipping past a Fusion defense that had been one of the tournament’s most stingy.
Golden Boot and Emerging Partnerships
Taylor Hodny, a striker from Grand Forks Red River, finished the competition with nine goals and was awarded the Golden Boot. Her chemistry with midfielder Quinn Erickson of Moorhead proved pivotal, as the duo linked up for several of the team’s most dangerous attacks.
Hodny, who had scored twice in last year’s Presidents Cup final, noted the jump in competition this season but praised the chance to test herself against the nation’s elite. “We wanted to see how we matched up with the great teams in the nation and considered ourselves one of them,” she said.

Beyond the scoreboard, the team expressed gratitude for the opportunity to wear North Dakota’s colors on a national stage. Hodny highlighted the camaraderie, saying she was grateful to represent her state alongside her best friends. Coach Melendez echoed the sentiment, calling the run a source of pride for the entire region.
