Dale Jago stepped back onto the ice at Duluth Denfeld High School this summer, reclaiming a position he has held for more than a decade. The school board’s decision to reinstate him followed an investigation into complaints that was ultimately closed without disciplinary action, a move that came after players, parents and fellow coaches voiced strong opposition.
The reinstatement was not just a bureaucratic reversal; it was a visible manifestation of community sentiment. Across Duluth, more than 600 signs and hats bearing the slogan "I STAND WITH JAGO" were distributed, underscoring the depth of support that helped sway the final decision.
Gratitude Amidst the Grind
In a brief statement, Jago thanked his wife Stephanie Jago, his daughters Payton Weinkauf and Billie Jago, and assistant coaches Jake Johnson and Bill Owens for their unwavering encouragement. He highlighted the resilience required to navigate a season clouded by uncertainty, emphasizing that hard work and perseverance would be the team’s guiding principles.
Jago’s coaching pedigree is well‑documented. Over ten seasons he has amassed 118 wins, 102 losses and four ties, guiding the Hunters to three consecutive section championship games from 2020 through 2022. The team’s breakthrough came in 2019‑20, when a 21‑win campaign produced the program’s first section finals appearance since the 2012‑13 season.
This year, however, the Hunters face a steep climb. The transition to Class AA has brought tougher competition, and the lack of a full summer training period — due to the lingering questions surrounding Jago’s return — has left the squad behind schedule. Early results show an 8‑16‑2 record, a far cry from the dominant form that characterized his earlier years.
The vacancy at Denfeld is now the final piece to be filled among local high school hockey programs, with other schools such as Superior, Cloquet‑Esko‑Carlton and Proctor/Hermantown already appointing their coaches. As the new season unfolds, the narrative around Jago’s comeback will likely remain a focal point for a community eager to see its team rebound.
