The 2026 boys soccer season will be remembered as a watershed moment for Dallas Independent School District, marking the first time a student from the district has secured an international soccer scholarship.
District officials note that the student body is 71.2 percent Hispanic, a demographic that has driven a focused effort to embed soccer into the schools’ identity. Since 2021, Marisela Lopez, the district’s soccer coordinator, has organized coaching clinics, expanded physical‑education curricula and forged partnerships with U.S. Soccer to broaden access.
A club that travels
To ensure that financial barriers do not limit talent, the district launched the Dallas Athletics Club, a nonprofit that funds club‑soccer participation and organizes overseas tours. The club has already played exhibition matches in Argentina and is slated for a Germany visit in 2027, giving its players exposure to different styles of play.
Lopez also instituted an annual showcase event that invites college recruiters to watch senior players, a move that has already attracted attention from programs in the United States and abroad.
District leaders see the soccer pipeline as a pathway not only to the U.S. national team but also to raising the district’s profile on the sports map, a strategy that aligns with broader community development goals.
