Dan Fitzgerald, the head coach of Kansas Baseball, has been crowned the 2026 Perfect Game College Coach of the Year, a testament to a season that reshaped the program’s identity.
His leadership produced a historic sweep of the Big 12 regular‑season title, the conference tournament championship and the Lawrence Regional, positioning Kansas among just two teams across the country to achieve that combination while also securing a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Jayhawks closed the year with 45 overall wins, including 20 conference victories and 20 road triumphs – the first time the program has reached those benchmarks since 1949. The campaign also set new school records for conference wins, road/neutral victories, home runs, slugging percentage and pitching strikeouts, underscoring the depth of the transformation.
Since Fitzgerald took the reins in 2022, Kansas has compiled a 144‑90 record, the most sustained success in the school’s modern era. The 2026 squad not only posted a .937 winning percentage during a 27‑3 stretch from March 15 to May 3, but also became the only team nationally to finish with at least 45 wins, 20 conference wins and 20 road wins.
A New Era for Kansas Baseball
Shortstop Tyson LeBlanc emerged as a cornerstone of the offense, smashing a school‑record 25 home runs and earning All‑Big 12 First Team honors. His production helped the roster generate 112 home runs for the season, a figure that contributed to a .507 slugging percentage, and 19 players have since signed professional contracts, a testament to the pipeline Fitzgerald has built.
The momentum carries into the next recruiting cycle, with analysts projecting the Jayhawks as a perennial contender in the Big 12 and on the national stage. Fitzgerald’s blueprint – blending aggressive hitting, disciplined pitching and a culture of excellence – appears to have cemented Kansas baseball as a program that consistently competes for championships.
