Dan Juzych’s earliest memories are tied to the sound of air raid sirens echoing over a war‑torn Ukrainian city, a soundtrack that would later mingle with the rhythmic slap of a hockey puck on ice.
A Passion Forged Early
Growing up in Detroit, he split his time between Saturday classes at a Ukrainian school, weekend scouting trips, and early mornings on the rink, where his talent earned him a spot among the Colby Mules.
Balancing a demanding biology curriculum with a full‑time athletic schedule, Juzych not only excelled academically but also helped the team reach two New England Small College Athletic Conference semifinals, a testament to his leadership on and off the ice.
In 2022, after the conflict intensified, he co‑founded Eye Care for Ukraine, a nonprofit that delivers ophthalmic equipment and training to frontline clinics, leveraging his network to secure donations and transport supplies across borders.
Repeated trips to the country allowed him to witness the resilience of civilians who, despite nightly sirens, continued to rebuild their lives, an experience that reshaped his perspective on the universality of human suffering.
Securing the Rhodes Scholarship required navigating multiple interview rounds; Juzych credits a decisive email to Colby’s president as the catalyst that kept him moving forward until he reached the final selection stage.
Oxford and Beyond
At Oxford, Juzych plans to delve into global health modeling and the history of science, technology, and medicine, aiming to merge quantitative analysis with policy design, while simultaneously preparing for medical school and a career that spans continents.
His ultimate ambition is to embed himself in a global network of scholars and practitioners, ensuring that advances in health care are not confined by geography but driven by a shared responsibility to those in need.
