Dan Mondragon Takes the Helm of Fairmont State Men's Basketball
Fairmont State University announced this week that Dan Mondragon will serve as the program’s 15th head coach of men’s basketball, a move that was welcomed by Greg Bamberger, the school’s Director of Athletics. The appointment marks a new chapter for the Falcons as they look to build on recent momentum.
A Coach With a Proven Record
Mondragon arrives after a series of high‑impact positions that have reshaped the teams he has led. At Mercer University he served two seasons as an assistant, helping the Bears post a program‑best 19 regular‑season wins and finish second in the Southern Conference. His five‑year tenure at Davis & Elkins College produced the school’s first back‑to‑back winning seasons since 1955, culminating in a 19‑11 record and the 2022‑23 MEC Coach of the Year honor.
Prior to that, he guided the DME Academy High School National Team for three seasons, turning the program into a nationally recognized powerhouse and mentoring prospects such as Moussa Diabate, now a G‑League player and former McDonald’s All‑American.
From Player to Captain
His playing roots trace back to Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University, where he captained the Eagles, contributed to three Sun Conference titles and an NAIA Tournament appearance in 2013, and became the first walk‑on team captain in program history.
Beyond the win column, Mondragon is known for cultivating talent and fostering growth within his squads. He hopes to translate that developmental ethos to Fairmont State, where he will work with student‑athletes eager to compete at the NCAA Division II level.
