Danish veteran Kevin Magnussen prepares for his NASCAR Cup Series debut at San Diego

The former Formula 1 driver will step into a Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet alongside seasoned teammates, facing a steep learning curve with limited practice.

A steep learning curve

Kevin Magnussen will line up on the streets of Naval Base Coronado this Sunday, stepping into the No. 91 Qualcomm Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing as his first taste of the NASCAR Cup Series.

The 33‑year‑old Danish driver brings a decade of top‑level experience from Formula 1, World Endurance Championship, IMSA and IndyCar, having contested the 94th edition of the Le Mans 24‑hour race just weeks earlier with the BMW Hypercar team.

He will share the grid with seasoned road‑course specialists Shane van Gisbergen, Ross Chastain and Connor Zilisch, all of whom have already proven their mettle on the 3.4‑mile circuit that winds through the naval base.

Magnussen’s preparation has been limited to a single 50‑minute practice session on Friday, after which he will qualify on Saturday and race on Sunday, a schedule that underscores the abrupt nature of his transition.

Working alongside him will be crew chief Phil Surgen, who guided Ross Chastain to six Cup victories between 2022 and 2025, adding a layer of veteran insight to the rookie’s debut.

Despite the tight window, Magnussen expressed genuine excitement and gratitude, citing his curiosity about NASCAR and the team’s dedication as key factors in his willingness to embrace the challenge.

Trackhouse Racing enters the weekend with a strong record on road and street courses, having seen Van Gisbergen win six of the last seven Cup events on similar layouts, a statistic that fuels optimism for the Danish newcomer.
