Andy Staples of On3 has placed Darian Mensah at the summit of his ACC quarterback rankings as the 2026 college football season approaches, a testament to the quarterback’s rising pedigree.
Mensah arrives in Coral Gables after stints at Tulane and Duke, where he guided both programs to conference championship games and earned a reputation for turning modest rosters into contenders.
From Green Wave to Blue Devils and Beyond
At Tulane, Mensah leveraged a redshirt year behind Michael Pratt and Kai Horton before emerging as the starter in 2023, throwing for 2,723 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions. His performance helped the Green Wave punch above their traditional Group of Six standing, reaching the conference championship for the first time in decades.
A year later, he transferred to Duke, where he posted 3,973 yards, 34 touchdowns and six interceptions, steering the Blue Devils to their first ACC title in 63 years. The Blue Devils’ resurgence was fueled by his ability to extend plays and keep defenses guessing.
A Strategic Move to Miami
After entering the transfer portal on Jan. 16, Mensah signed an NIL extension with Duke before the deadline, only to have the school sue him over a breach of agreement. The dispute was settled, clearing the path for him to join the Miami Hurricanes.
Miami’s offensive coordinator has highlighted Mensah’s versatility, noting that his mobility adds a layer of protection for the pocket and opens up play‑action opportunities. The coaching staff believes his skill set aligns perfectly with a modern, up‑tempo scheme.
The Hurricanes will lean on returning star running back Mark Fletcher, one of the nation’s most dynamic backs, and playmaker Malachi Toney, who is expected to be a primary target in the passing game. Adding to the mix, wide receiver Cooper Barkate, Mensah’s former favorite at Duke, has also joined the roster, giving the quarterback a familiar security blanket.
