The Darien Little League baseball team clinched its first-ever Section 1 championship on Tuesday, downing Southington 10-2 in a game that blended early fireworks with steady, disciplined play. The victory marks a milestone for a program that has built its reputation on steady development rather than flash.
Third baseman Rex Paquette ignited the offense with a three-run double in the opening inning, driving in the first three runs of what would become a ten-run outing. Southington answered with a solo home run from Will Hirsch, but Darien’s early surge proved decisive.
Left-hander Chase Sutter delivered a solid four-inning stretch, striking out seven batters while keeping Southington’s hitters at bay. His effort bought the team precious innings to build a comfortable lead.
Reliever Jack Houlihan closed the game by pitching the final two innings, fanning five batters and preserving the lead.
