West Virginia University’s defensive line will be missing a key contributor for the entire 2026 season after redshirt sophomore Darius Wiley was ruled out following a severe ligament injury.
The injury occurred early in the fourth quarter of a recent game when the quarterback’s rush forced Wiley to fumble, a turnover that was recovered by teammate Zeke Durham‑Campbell.
Wiley had been a standout performer in junior college, earning JUCO All‑American honors and the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2025, and he carried those accolades into his redshirt sophomore season at WVU.
In the game he logged 26 snaps, posting three tackles, two pressures and a tackle for loss, while his broader 2025 statistics included 57 tackles, 20 for loss, nine sacks and three pass breakups.
Impact on the Mountaineers’ Defensive Depth
With Wiley sidelined, WVU will have to reshuffle its defensive front, giving increased responsibility to freshmen Wilnerson Telemaque and Brandon Caesar, as well as to veterans Taylor Brown and KJ Henson.
Coach Rich Rodriguez and defensive coordinator Nate Gabriel are expected to adjust scheme rotations to compensate for the loss of Wiley’s pass‑rushing ability and interior presence.
The setback also underscores the importance of depth in college football, where injuries can dramatically alter a team’s competitive outlook in the upcoming season.
