After eight years leading the strength and conditioning programs at Arkansas, Dave Richardson is making his way back to Columbus, where he first made his mark on college basketball.
From 2005 to 2017 he served as the Buckeyes’ director of physical preparation, helping the program to eleven postseason appearances and two Final Four runs. His return comes as Ohio State prepares for the 2026‑27 season, bringing a blend of experience and a reputation for cultivating mental toughness alongside raw power.
A career built on more than reps
Richardson’s philosophy extends beyond weight rooms. Colleagues describe a coach who emphasizes personal growth, resilience and the kind of mental fortitude that can shift a player’s trajectory in a single game.
During his Arkansas tenure he oversaw the Razorbacks’ women’s basketball and tennis squads as well, a testament to his versatility. The move also aligns with his RSCC‑E designation, earned in 2020, which recognizes sustained excellence in the field.
His impact is measurable. At Arkansas he helped guide the men’s team to multiple Sweet 16 appearances, and nine of his players have been drafted into the NBA, with another twenty‑one carving out professional careers.
The upcoming staff overhaul will see Richardson joined by two other newcomers, forming part of a broader effort to refresh the program’s approach to player development.
Fans will recognize his name from the early 2000s, when he helped shape the Buckeyes’ identity during a period that included stars such as Deshaun Thomas and William Buford. Those memories, combined with his recent successes, make his return a storyline that resonates across the university’s basketball community.
