The Davenport Community School District has voted unanimously to rename Brady Street Stadium as Roger Craig Stadium, a tribute to the hometown native who rose from local stardom to NFL greatness.
A Local Hero’s National Impact
The decision reflects more than a simple name change; it is a recognition of a career that reshaped how the game is played and inspired generations of players across the country.
Craig’s high school years were marked by a state championship in 1976, and as a senior he rushed for 1,565 yards and 27 touchdowns, numbers that still stand as school records.
At the University of Nebraska he refined his versatility, a trait that would define his NFL tenure, where he became the first player to eclipse 1,000 yards both rushing and receiving in a single season.
Three Super Bowl rings later, Craig retired with 9,030 rushing yards, 5,517 receiving yards and 82 total touchdowns, statistics that place him among the all‑time greats of the sport.
His upcoming induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, on August 8 will cement a legacy that began on the fields of Davenport and ended on the grandest stage of American football.
