A homecoming for a seasoned strategist
David Heard, a Southern Oregon University alumnus, has been named interim head coach of the Raiders’ women’s basketball program for the 2026‑27 season, stepping into the role after Carlotta Kloppenburg‑Pruitt’s unexpected resignation.
Heard brings three decades of coaching experience from the Central Point School District, where he guided Crater High’s girls team to a 255‑85 record, six state tournament appearances and seven conference titles, earning OSAA Class 5A Athletic Director of the Year honors in 2023.
Having served as a volunteer with the SOU squad since 2023, Heard is no stranger to the campus culture; his deep roots in the region and his history as a four‑year Raider men’s basketball player give him a unique perspective on player development and community engagement.
He succeeds a coach who captured five Cascade Conference championships in five seasons, and Heard says his priority is to preserve the program’s competitive edge while fostering academic success among student‑athletes.
The appointment also resonates personally, as Heard’s youngest daughter, Mallory Heard, completed a five‑year stint with the Raiders from 2017 to 2022, underscoring the family’s long‑standing connection to the university.
Heard’s coaching philosophy emphasizes disciplined defense, three‑point efficiency and the cultivation of well‑rounded student‑athletes, a stance that aligns with the university’s broader mission of academic‑athletic excellence.
Athletic directors and university officials alike have praised his leadership, noting his recognition as Educator of the Year in 2020 and his reputation for integrity both on and off the court.
As the team prepares for the upcoming season, fans can expect a blend of continuity and fresh energy, with Heard promising to honor the program’s proud tradition while charting a path toward future success.
