David Lunn, a three‑time 5A state champion at Volcano Vista High School in Albuquerque, announced that he will finish his senior year at the prestigious CATS Academy in Boston, a move designed to sharpen his game against elite competition before college.
Lunn finished his junior season with averages of 20.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists, helping the Hawks secure three consecutive state titles. His decision follows a pattern among top New Mexico prospects who leave early for East Coast prep schools to boost visibility for college recruitment.
A Calculated Leap
The transfer places Lunn in the Nike Youth Basketball League’s EYBL Scholastic division, where he will face some of the nation’s most coveted high school talent. He will also compete this spring and summer with Team Thrill, an elite AAU program based in Baltimore.
In a brief statement, Lunn called his time at Volcano Vista “a blessing” and expressed excitement about the next chapter, noting that the move is part of a broader effort to raise his profile and prepare for the next level of basketball.
He joins a small but growing list of New Mexico athletes, including Bella Hines and Daniel Jacobsen, who have made similar transitions to elite prep schools on the East Coast.
