David O’Connor Resigns After 10 Seasons, Joins Hazel Green Coaching Staff

The veteran coach’s departure follows a decade of regional dominance and a state championship, as he seeks a new challenge in Alabama.

David O'Connor, who has led the Giles County Bobcats for ten years, announced his resignation on Tuesday, ending a tenure that produced four region championships in five seasons and a state title in 2009.

He will soon take up a coaching position at Hazel Green High School in Alabama, a move he says is driven by personal convenience and the opportunity to work closer to home.

A Legacy of Excellence

O'Connor reflected on the program’s trajectory, noting that despite his departure, Giles County remains well‑positioned for continued success and even a future state championship.

During his time in Tennessee, O'Connor helped cultivate a culture of hard work and high expectations, a legacy that culminated in three straight state semifinal appearances from 2021 through 2023.

The Bobcats finished the most recent season with a 9‑4 record, advancing to the state quarterfinals, underscoring the program’s resilience and depth.

Before returning to Tennessee, O'Connor had also coached at Buckhorn High in Alabama, where he honed the strategies that later propelled Giles County to regional prominence.
