Davis County High School, located in the heart of Iowa, announced on Monday that it would discontinue its varsity football program for the upcoming 2026 season.
The decision, driven by concerns over player safety and a steep decline in participation, was made effective immediately and will affect the school's schedule moving forward.
District officials cited a combination of dwindling roster numbers and the physical toll on young athletes as the primary motivators behind the move.
The cancellation comes at a time when several other Iowa high schools have also opted out of the 2026 football season, leaving many teams scrambling to fill gaps in their calendars.
Rebuilding the Program
Among those affected are longtime rivals such as Rockford, Exira‑EHK and Siouxland Christian, all of which have announced similar shutdowns.
The Mustangs, who finished the 2025 campaign winless at 0‑8, had not posted a losing record since 2012, a streak that dated back to a period of dominance between 2008 and 2012.
That season, the team was comprised of only four juniors, nine sophomores and nine freshmen, a youthful lineup that struggled to generate offense after losing nearly all of the previous year's rushing and passing production.
District Athletic Director Megan Christiansen explained that the new approach will focus on a junior varsity‑only schedule in 2026, allowing younger players to develop without the pressures of a full varsity slate.
Tom Hallgren, the school board president, added that the move is part of a broader effort to prioritize student well‑being while rebuilding a program that once consistently claimed eight or more victories each year.
Dave Mason, the head coach, outlined a tentative plan to field a JV squad that will compete against nearby districts, with the hope of restoring confidence and participation levels in the coming years.
Phil Lite, a longtime supporter of the football program, expressed optimism that the junior varsity model will provide a safer environment for athletes while laying the groundwork for a future return to varsity competition.
