Dawson Baker, the BYU guard who has battled a series of injuries since joining the program, is set to make a much‑anticipated return for the 2026‑27 season. His journey has been marked by setbacks, but the forward momentum in his rehabilitation suggests he will be ready to contribute on the court once again.
A Career Shaped by Setbacks and Comebacks
Baker began his collegiate career at the University of California, Irvine before transferring to BYU, where a foot injury forced him to redshirt during the 2023‑24 season. Since then, he has accumulated six additional years of eligibility, bringing his total to a seventh season of play.
A torn ACL sustained in November 2023 required extensive surgery and a lengthy recovery period. Over the past months, Baker has shown steady progress, completing on‑court drills and participating in full‑speed practices, which have convinced coaches and teammates that he is nearing full health.
Impact on the Cougars
During the 2024‑25 campaign, Baker helped the Cougars break through to the Sweet 16, shooting 47.4% from three‑point range in limited appearances and 38% in the Sweet 16 run. His shooting touch, basketball IQ, and veteran presence are expected to be pivotal as BYU aims for a deeper tournament run next year.
Coach Kevin Young praised Baker’s resilience, noting that his work ethic in rehab has set a standard for the squad. “Dawson’s determination is contagious,” Young said. “When he steps onto the court, the team feels a lift that can’t be measured statistically.”
