The University of Dayton has unveiled a series of moves within its men's basketball program that signal a strategic shift as the Flyers prepare for the upcoming campaign. The changes come after the departure of Ricardo Greer, who accepted a position on Jeff Capel's staff at Pittsburgh, leaving a vacancy that the administration has moved quickly to fill.
James Kane, who joined the Dayton staff in 2021 after a stint at Iowa State, has been promoted to associate head coach. His long‑term presence and deep understanding of the program have earned him high praise from head coach Anthony Grant, who highlighted Kane's basketball intelligence and recruiting acumen as key assets for the team's continued success.
New faces bring fresh expertise
The program also welcomed two new assistant coaches: Nick Irvin and Jordan Talley. Irvin arrives after four seasons at Arizona State, where he worked closely with former Sun Devil stars Kyle Davis and Josh Cunningham. His background includes a formative period as head coach at Morgan Park High School in Chicago, and he comes from a basketball family — his father, Mac Irvin, founded the renowned AAU team, the Mac Irvin Fire. Talley, a Florida native, brings experience from the University of Florida and Duquesne, as well as a track record of developing elite talent across various high schools and colleges in the Sunshine State.
Both newcomers are expected to bolster the Flyers' recruiting reach and on‑court development. Irvin's connections to key players and his experience at a Power Five program should enhance Dayton's ability to attract top recruits, while Talley's proven player‑development skills add depth to the coaching philosophy. Their combined expertise aims to maintain the momentum the program has built in recent seasons.
The adjustments reflect a broader ambition to keep the Dayton Flyers competitive in a crowded conference landscape. By promoting a trusted internal candidate and integrating experienced assistants with strong recruiting networks, the university hopes to sustain its upward trajectory and continue delivering strong performances on the national stage.
