A Bright Transformation at the World’s Most Famous Track
Daytona International Speedway is set to replace its 1998 lighting system with a state‑of‑the‑art LED array, a project being led by Iowa‑based Musco Lighting. The upgrade aims to boost safety for drivers and create a more immersive atmosphere for fans.
The first phase of the installation will be operational in time for the August NASCAR race, ensuring that the upcoming Coke Zero Sugar 400 benefits from improved illumination. Elements of the new system will be visible during that event, marking a tangible step toward the full rollout.
Beyond sheer brightness, the new LEDs will enable a variety of light‑sensory activities that can be choreographed for special occasions, adding a dynamic visual layer to the track’s already vibrant environment.
This modernization continues a pattern of major upgrades that have defined the speedway’s evolution since the 1980s, from the construction of the Winston Tower to the Daytona Rising project that reshaped grandstand seating and fan access.
The initiative is being watched closely by Frank Kelleher, a longtime executive at the speedway, and Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s senior vice president. The legacy of the late Dale Earnhardt also looms large, linking the track’s storied past with its forward‑looking future.
With the entire lighting system scheduled for completion before the 2027 Rolex 24, Daytona aims to set a benchmark for large‑scale sports venues that are adopting LED technology as the industry standard.
