DeAndre Haynes Joins Washington Coaching Staff

Former Kent State Star Brings Decade‑Long Experience to the Huskies

A Strategic Addition to the Huskies' Bench

Washington University announced Tuesday that DeAndre Haynes will join the men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant under head coach Danny Sprinkle. The move comes as the program seeks to bolster its tactical depth and player development capabilities ahead of the upcoming season.

Haynes arrives after a distinguished playing career that took him across Europe, where he averaged 14.2 points, 4.8 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game in his final professional season. A four‑year starter at point guard for Kent State, he earned MAC Player of the Year honors in 2006 and remains among the program’s all‑time leaders in points, assists and steals.

His coaching résumé is equally impressive. Over more than a decade, Haynes has held assistant positions at Marquette, Maryland, Michigan, Toledo and his alma mater, Kent State. At Marquette, he helped guide the Golden Eagles to NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his first four seasons and contributed to 56 combined wins over two seasons.

Haynes also played a pivotal role in Michigan’s historic 33‑win campaign that culminated in a Final Four appearance, and he was part of Maryland’s 2019‑20 Big Ten Championship team. His experience includes leading Toledo to a postseason berth in the College Basketball Invitational and securing a regular‑season MAC title with Kent State.

Danny Sprinkle emphasized that Haynes’ blend of playing acumen and coaching success makes him an ideal fit for the program’s ambitions. "DeAndre brings a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record of developing talent," Sprinkle said in the announcement. "His insights will be invaluable as we aim to elevate our competitiveness in the conference and beyond."

The hiring underscores Washington’s commitment to assembling a staff that can attract top talent and foster player growth. With a network that spans multiple power‑conference programs and a deep understanding of both the Midwest and international markets, Haynes is expected to enhance recruiting efforts and on‑court strategy.

Looking Ahead

As the Huskies prepare for the upcoming season, the addition of Haynes adds a layer of strategic depth that could prove decisive in close contests. His background in developing All‑America and All‑Big Ten performers suggests he will be instrumental in shaping the next generation of Washington players.
