A Strategic Addition to the Yellow Jackets' Staff
DeAndre Hopkins, a five‑time NFL All‑Pro receiver, has taken a new path off the field, joining the Georgia Tech coaching staff as an assistant wide receivers coach. His arrival marks the latest chapter for a player whose name has long been synonymous with elite pass‑catching in the NFL.
Head coach Brent Key emphasized that Hopkins’ leadership and deep understanding of offensive schemes made him a natural fit, noting the longtime relationship between Hopkins and offensive coordinator George Godsey. Key described the hire as a "strategic addition" that should accelerate the development of the Yellow Jackets' receiving corps.
Hopkins arrives after a 13‑year NFL career in which he amassed 1,006 receptions for 13,295 yards and 85 touchdowns, highlighted by five All‑Pro selections and a 2017 season that saw him lead the league with 13 touchdown catches while playing for the Houston Texans.
The former Clemson standout, who was drafted in the first round by the Texans in 2013, brings not only a wealth of professional experience but also a proven track record of elevating his game when paired with Godsey, who served as the Texans’ quarterbacks coach in 2014.
Season Outlook and Fall Camp
Georgia Tech will open fall camp on Monday, gearing up for its season opener against Colorado on Thursday, Sept. 3, at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field. The game will be streamed nationally on ESPN, giving fans an early glimpse of the new‑look Yellow Jackets as they integrate Hopkins into their offensive game plan.
With a roster that includes returning starters and several promising newcomers, the Yellow Jackets hope to build on last season’s progress. Hopkins’ presence is expected to provide a direct link between the team’s veteran coaching staff and its developing players, fostering a culture of precision and professionalism.
