Performance Over Projection
DeBoer made it clear that the team will prioritize what each quarterback does on the field today, not the promise of what they might become. "We’re looking at how they execute now," he said, underscoring a hands‑on approach to development.
Austin Mack enters the conversation with a solid track record: 26 completions on 35 pass attempts, 267 yards and four total touchdowns accumulated over three seasons. Those numbers illustrate a player who has already shown he can move the ball effectively.
Freshman Keelon Russell also made a splash in 2025, completing 11 of 15 attempts for 143 yards and two touchdowns. His poise in limited action hinted at a high ceiling, but DeBoer wants to see how he handles the pressures of a full game.
Season Opener on the Horizon
The Crimson Tide will open the 2026 campaign against East Carolina on Saturday, September 5, with a 11 a.m. CT kickoff broadcast on ABC. The matchup will serve as the first real test of DeBoer’s quarterback philosophy.
While the competition remains fluid, DeBoer expressed confidence that both Mack and Russell will continue to grow and contribute immediately. "Their ceilings are high," he noted, "but the focus is on what they bring to the field right now."
