Homecoming Triumph
DeCarlos Nicholson, a 2020 graduate of Petal High School, has swapped the bright lights of the NFL draft for a more personal kind of spotlight — one that shines on the next generation of athletes in his hometown.
Earlier this month, Nicholson organized a week‑long football camp that drew more than 100 student athletes from across the region. The program blended drills in agility, teamwork and decision‑making with lessons on sportsmanship and academic ambition.
Speaking to the participants, Nicholson stressed that success on the field begins with discipline off it. “I want these kids to see that hard work can open doors, whether they end up on a college roster or in a career they’re passionate about,” he said.
A Mentor in the Making
The camp’s coaching staff included former college teammates and local mentors, all volunteers who shared Nicholson’s belief that giving back is a responsibility, not a choice. Parents praised the positive environment, noting that the lessons extended beyond football.
Nicholson’s own journey — from a walk‑on at the University of Southern California to an undrafted free agent signed by the Cleveland Browns — serves as a living example of perseverance. He often reminds the campers that setbacks are merely stepping stones when paired with relentless effort.
Looking ahead, Nicholson hinted at plans for a fundraiser that could expand the camp’s reach and provide scholarships for under‑privileged participants. “The goal is to keep building a pipeline of talent and character,” he added.
