A hard‑hit ball is identified when a batted ball leaves the bat at 95 mph or higher, a threshold that correlates strongly with extra‑base potential. When that contact also falls between eight and 32 degrees of launch, the resulting combination is one of the most telling indicators of offensive quality.
Expected statistics such as xBA and xwOBA extend this logic further. xBA estimates the probability that a batted ball will become a hit, while xwOBA refines the model by incorporating exit velocity, launch angle, and the runner’s sprint speed. Both metrics give a clearer picture of a player’s true hitting value beyond simple outcomes.
EV50 offers a complementary view by averaging the hardest half of a batter’s batted balls — or conversely, the softest half allowed by a pitcher. This split‑half approach highlights consistency and can differentiate between a power hitter who occasionally connects and one who does so repeatedly.
Bat speed, measured at the sweet spot of the barrel, is another cornerstone. A swing that exceeds 75 mph is considered fast, and the vertical angle of the bat’s path in the 40 ms before impact reveals whether a hitter is attacking the ball steeply or flattening out. An "Ideal Attack Angle" of 5‑20 degrees is often associated with optimal launch outcomes.
Pitchers benefit from the same lens. xERA translates xwOBA into a familiar ERA scale, allowing analysts to evaluate a pitcher’s performance in terms of runs allowed while accounting for the quality of contact they permit.
Defensively, Statcast shines with metrics like Jump, which highlights outfielders who react quickly and take the most direct routes, and Bolt, which flags any sprint that reaches or exceeds 30 ft/sec. Together, these numbers paint a comprehensive portrait of both offense and defense, turning raw athletic feats into actionable insight.
