One of the most talked‑about thresholds is the definition of a hard‑hit ball: any batted ball that leaves the bat at 95 mph or faster is classified as such, signaling a higher likelihood of extra‑base hits.
Analysts also focus on launch angle, the vertical trajectory of the ball after contact. A launch angle between eight and 32 degrees is generally considered optimal, balancing line drives with enough elevation to clear the infield.
Expected batting average, or xBA, translates a ball’s exit velocity and launch angle into a probability of becoming a hit, offering a context‑adjusted measure of a hitter’s true performance.
Building on that, xwOBA incorporates exit velocity, launch angle and a player’s sprint speed to estimate the expected outcomes of each batted ball, refining the traditional walk‑up statistics.
EV50 takes this a step further by averaging the hardest half of a batter’s batted balls, highlighting consistency in producing high‑quality contact.
Bat speed, measured at the sweet spot of the bat, is another key indicator; a swing that exceeds 75 mph is labeled a fast swing and is often associated with greater exit velocities.
The vertical angle of the bat’s sweet spot at impact is tracked as part of the Ideal Attack Angle concept, with a 5‑20 degree window marking the most productive contact zone.
xERA converts xwOBA into an Earned Run Average‑scale figure, giving pitchers a more accurate reflection of the runs they actually allow based on the quality of contact they surrender.
