Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is set to serve as the honorary starter for a historic NASCAR race that will be held at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, marking the first time a Cup Series event will take place in the county. The ceremony ties into a broader celebration of the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary, a milestone that the service shares with the Marine Corps.
Organizers have announced that the first 10,000 spectators each day will receive commemorative gifts, and roughly 50,000 tickets have already been sold for the Saturday and Sunday programs. The main event, the Anduril 250, a NASCAR Cup Series Race, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, while an O’Reilly Auto Parts series race kicks off at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
A Historic Race Amid Growing Scrutiny
Authorities have warned that the concentration of spectators could strain the base’s limited access routes, prompting heightened security protocols and close coordination with the California Highway Patrol to manage traffic flow. The event’s security posture reflects the Navy’s emphasis on protecting a high‑value installation while accommodating a large public gathering.
The race follows a controversial demonstration at Camp Pendleton last October, where an artillery round detonated prematurely, sending shrapnel onto a California Highway Patrol vehicle. That incident, coupled with a recent Pentagon investigation into a strike that killed more than 165 civilians in Iran, has added a layer of political tension. Senators have begun pressing the Pentagon to release overdue reports on civilian harm, threatening to block funding for senior officials’ travel, including Hegseth’s upcoming trip. Vice President JD Vance was also present at the earlier demonstration, underscoring the intertwined nature of military ceremonies and policy debates.
