Defenseman Matthew Ronn Commits to Minot State University Hockey Program

Yorkton native signs to join the Beavers for 2026 season, aiming for a national championship

Matthew Ronn, a 6‑foot‑tall, 179‑pound defenseman from Yorkton, Saskatchewan, has officially signed with Minot State University, where he will join the Beavers hockey program and pursue his studies beginning in the fall of 2026.

Ronn’s junior career in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League saw him suit up for the Estevan Bruins during the most recent winter, where he recorded 7 goals and 22 assists across 42 appearances, showcasing his offensive flair and defensive reliability.

Prior to his stint with the Bruins, the young blueliner honed his craft with the Blackfalds Bulldogs and the Whitecourt Wolverines, two Alberta‑based clubs that have served as stepping stones for many aspiring professionals.

Coach Wyatt Waselenchuk, who oversees the Beavers’ defensive unit, praised Ronn’s blend of skill and character, noting that the player’s two‑way ability and competitive spirit make him a valuable asset on both the power play and the penalty kill.

Expressing his excitement, Ronn said he looks forward to contributing to the team’s chase of a National Championship, adding that the prospect of playing alongside Colton Getzlaff and growing up alongside Grady Hoffman in Yorkton made the decision feel like a natural fit.

The commitment also underscores the growing pipeline of talent from the Canadian prairies into the North Dakota collegiate scene, a trend that could further elevate the program’s profile in the coming years.

A Strategic Addition for the Beavers

With the new recruits set to arrive, the coaching staff believes the incoming class will bring depth and versatility, positioning Minot State for a strong campaign both on the ice and in the classroom.
