A Career of Growth and Promise
Sam Houston State announced the death of defensive back William Davis on May 16. He was 22 years old. The university released a brief statement confirming his passing but did not disclose a cause or the location where he died.
Davis, a senior from South Boston, Virginia, had spent the past year preparing for a seventh year of college football after transferring to Sam Houston for the 2026 season. His journey began at Division II Virginia Union, where he redshirted his first two seasons before emerging as a standout at West Virginia for a single game in 2025. Over his collegiate career he recorded 115 tackles, 25 for loss, four sacks and nine interceptions, numbers that reflected his growth from a quiet freshman to a defensive leader.
Voices of Grief and Tribute
Coach Phil Longo described Davis as an upbeat, positive, and passionate young man whose presence lifted the entire locker room. Athletic director Bobby Williams added that the university extends its deepest condolences to Davis’s family and to everyone whose lives he touched.
Teammates and alumni have taken to social media to share memories of his relentless work ethic and the way he approached every practice with a smile. Though his time on the field was cut short, the impact he made on the program and the broader community will endure.
