Delaware State University’s football program has moved from a dismal 1‑11 record to an 8‑4 finish in just two seasons, a turnaround driven by head coach DeSean Jackson’s aggressive offensive overhaul. Jackson has pledged to reshape the passing attack, emphasizing a quarterback who can command the offense, read defenses and take ownership of the team’s success.
The latest addition to that quest is Samari Collier, a former Coastal Carolina signal‑caller who signed with the Hornets during August camp. Collier brings a blend of FBS experience and junior‑college championship pedigree, positioning him as a key contender in a crowded quarterback room.
At Coastal Carolina, Collier appeared in eight games last season, completing 38 of 78 passes for 489 yards with seven touchdowns against just two interceptions. He also rushed 71 times for 429 yards and seven scores, showcasing a dual‑threat ability that includes an 85‑yard touchdown run against Georgia State.
Collier’s résumé includes a national championship at Hutchinson Community College in 2024, where he generated 1,977 yards of total offense and 29 touchdowns. That experience, coupled with his FBS exposure, adds a layer of credibility to his candidacy for the starting role.
A New Chapter for the Hornets
Before Collier’s arrival, the Hornets had five quarterbacks vying for the top spot, including Noah Radick, Mikael Davis, Marquis Adams, Jayden Sauray and freshman Jerry Bali. The competition remains open, and Jackson has stressed that the eventual starter must demonstrate leadership, poise and the ability to make quick defensive reads.
The preseason outlook reflects the optimism surrounding the program. Delaware State received two first‑place votes and was ranked third in the 2026 MEAC preseason poll, entering Jackson’s second year with high expectations and a clear ambition to challenge for the conference title.
While the coaching staff has not yet named a starter, the quarterback competition is viewed as a pivotal variable in the Hornets’ quest for a MEAC championship. Collier’s blend of experience, athleticism and championship background makes him a focal point of that battle.
