Mike Logothetis, a longtime soccer enthusiast from Delaware, has been chosen among 3,000 volunteers to serve at the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Philadelphia.
A Volunteer’s Role on the World Stage
During the tournament he will carry the national team banners onto the field before each match, a duty that will include the opening game between Côte d'Ivoire and Ecuador.
Logothetis will don a bright Adidas uniform for the ceremonies and is required to arrive at the stadium six hours before kickoff, completing eight six‑hour shifts throughout the event.
The format for pre‑match ceremonies has been updated, with players entering through a dedicated arch, adding a fresh visual element to the spectacle.
His soccer journey began in 1994 when he attended his first World Cup match at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C., and he has since contributed to the sport as an announcer for First State FC, a semi‑professional team based in Wilmington.
Prior experience at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 helped him secure this volunteer role, and his selection came after a competitive process that attracted 26,000 applicants.
The Ivorian squad will be housed at the Hotel du Pont in Wilmington during the tournament, linking the city to the global event.
Logothetis’s involvement highlights the growing connection between local soccer communities and international competitions, a partnership championed by organizations such as Philly Soccer 2026 and the U.S. Soccer Foundation.
