Championship Momentum
The Delta Eagles baseball team clinched the Sectional 24 championship with a 4-3 victory over Connersville, marking the program’s third straight regional title. The win underscores the squad’s resilience after a rain‑shortened week that forced two games into an eight‑hour stretch.
Early in the contest the Eagles exploded for three runs in the top of the first, capitalizing on a timely hit by sophomore left fielder Eli Overholt and a sacrifice fly from senior catcher Kaden Crist. Connersville answered with a single run in the bottom of the first, but the lead never slipped away.
Junior right‑hander Kye Berger earned the win after tossing four solid innings, while senior Ayden Mitchell fanned ten batters and walked none, allowing just two runs on six hits. Sebastian Gillum closed the game with two strikeouts in the final inning, sealing the triumph.
The decisive moment came in the seventh when Overholt delivered an RBI single that pushed the lead to 4-2. Reliever Maddox Huffman then struck out two batters in the bottom of the seventh, leaving the tying run stranded at second base and completing the shutout.
Rain delays earlier in the week had compressed the schedule, forcing the Eagles to play back‑to‑back games in a single day. Despite the fatigue, the team’s depth shone through as multiple players — including Linn, Thomas and Berger — finished with two hits and two RBIs apiece.
Yorktown’s season concluded with a 5-2 loss to Connersville in the semifinals, a game that featured a seesaw early lead, a sacrifice fly from Sam Tokar, and a double play that preserved the Spartans’ advantage. Head coach Austin Stout’s debut season ended at 11‑16, but the program will return most of its key contributors next spring.
Looking ahead, Delta will meet its next regional opponent on Saturday, June 6, aiming to extend its championship streak. The Eagles’ blend of veteran arms and emerging talent positions them as a formidable force heading into the next round of play.
