BYU’s football program received a boost this week when Demichael Burks, a 6‑foot‑2, 160‑pound cornerback from Desert Pines High School in Nevada, announced his verbal commitment to the Cougars. The announcement came via his personal X and Instagram accounts on Monday, ending a brief pledge to Fresno State that he had held since last spring.
A Versatile Defensive Playmaker
Burks chose the Mountain West’s flagship program after a weekend official visit to Provo, where he was courted by cornerbacks coach Lewis Walker during the spring evaluation period. Walker’s offer, made in the midst of a competitive recruiting landscape, helped seal the deal for a player who also excelled as a receiver with 337 yards and three touchdowns last season.
The commitment marks the sixth addition to BYU’s 2027 recruiting class and underscores the Cougars’ ability to outshine a host of suitors, including Pac‑12 members Fresno State, Colorado State, Texas State, as well as Mountain West rivals Nevada and San Jose State. Burks’ three interceptions and 28 tackles on defense, coupled with his receiving production, give the staff a versatile piece for the secondary.
Coach Walker, who has been instrumental in shaping the Cougars’ defensive recruiting strategy, praised Burks’s size and ball‑hawking instincts. “He brings a physical presence that complements our existing secondary, and his ability to play both sides of the ball adds depth,” Walker said in a statement.
The addition of Burks is expected to strengthen BYU’s defensive backfield as the program looks to build on its recent on‑field successes. Analysts such as Ryan Wooten have noted that the commitment reflects a broader trend of top Nevada talent gravitating toward Provo, a pattern that could continue to shape the team’s future roster.
